Early Developer’s Vision:
The actual development of Holmby Hills began when millionaire Arthur Letts, Sr. purchased 400 acres of the Wolfskill ranch for $100 an acre. Letts, who was originally from England had made his fortune in the mercantile business in Los Angeles. He founded the Broadway Department Store and Bullocks Department Stores chains. Letts’ master plan for his purchase was to create a neighborhood of grand estates. He named his development "Holmby Hills," in honor of his birthplace, a small hamlet in England called Holdenby. Unfortunalely Letts died suddenly in 1923, before he could fully realize his vision. Letts namesake, Arthur Letts, Jr .was among the first to build a mansion here. The Tudor-style home ultimately we be turned into the Playboy mansion. In the 1950s, Walt Disney built his dream home in Holmby Hills, which featured a miniature steam railroad, complete with 300 feet of track and a 90-foot long tunnel.
